Our continuing love affair with Jane Eyre

The first reading and every consecutive reading of this book is a revelation. Jane Eyre, what a powerful character. Even though a timid, secluded, and isolated woman, there is no other way to describe Jane but powerful. We fell in love with her. The clarity with which she moves through life, the grasp on her mind, her values, and standing up for herself in Victorian England, a time of rigid class systems and gender roles, is revolutionary.
Charlotte Brontë’s prose is addictive and a pleasure to read. She creates an intimate relationship between Jane and us, the Reader, so you get a deep understanding of Jane and her rich, complex inner world. There are so many moments that leave a lasting impression. And Jane’s relationships with each character is so well laid out. Particularly Helen, her first friend, the first person to show her unconditional love. And of course, Rochester (definitely has his problems like being a typical entitled gentleman and much older than Jane!) who gave Jane her first home, who saw her for who she was and not only loved her, but celebrated her for it! And anyone who loves Jane is a champion in our book!
All the Brontë sisters were so far ahead of their time (Anne Brontë is our hero but more on that later, she deserves a post of her own). They wrote of women trapped in the confines of their society but willed their independence. With Jane Eyre, we see a poor, obscure, plain, and little woman finding strength in herself even as the world shuns, judges, and cages her. This book is a repeat read for us (you can tell from the state of the book!). And each time, a particular turn of phrase, an expression, or a statement catches our attention like when reading it for the first time. This is a book that just keeps on giving!
